* The estimated Sequestration Impact is the aggregate projected amount by which sequestration will reduce federal funding for academic research and development (R&D) at the universities listed on this page. These institutions are members of the Association of American Universities, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and The Science Coalition and do not represent all R&D activity in the state. The estimated aggregate state impact was calculated using cuts of 8.2 percent and 9.4 percent for non-defense agencies and defense agencies respectively (as estimated by the Office of Management and Budget in its report to Congress, mandated by the Sequestration Transparency Act) applied to the fiscal year (FY) 2010 R&D expenditures reported by the listed institutions and published in the National Science Foundation, National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics Higher Education Research and Development Survey for FY2010 (released in 2012).

NOTE: The estimated impact was calculated prior to the Jan. 1, 2013 passage of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 (ATRA) and does not reflect any adjustments that might stem from passage of that law. The ATRA delayed implementation of the sequester by two months and reduced total 2013 deficit reduction, as stipulated in the Budget Control Act of 2011, by $24 billion.
