An associate professor at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center recently was awarded two federal stimulus grants totaling $1.4 million for the study of head and neck cancer.

Dr. Wendell G. Yarbrough, associate professor of otolaryngology and cancer biology, applied for the competitive Challenge Grants, available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The first grant will support testing various drugs on human cancer cells in mice to determine effectiveness, plus look for genetic markers that would help find the right drug for treatment early.
