The $35 million to the Carver College funds 80 projects and supports an estimated 190 jobs, including faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and researchers, Rothman said. "It stimulates the local economy, and more importantly, it stimulates biomedical research," he said. "It helps Iowans in many ways."
The next two years could be a boon for biomedical discoveries, thanks to billions in federal stimulus dollars distributed nationally for research, University of Iowa researchers said Wednesday. The $10 billion in federal stimulus dollars that went to the National Institutes of Health -- which distributed the money to colleges and research institutions through competitive grants -- will mean more insight into causes and treatments of diseases, said Paul Rothman, dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine.
